Former soldier Daniel Khalife has been accused of providing Iran with false information in an attempt to deceive them, a court has heard. The 23-year-old, who previously served in the British army, allegedly escaped from prison and passed secret data to Iranian intelligence services. Khalife supposedly fled his Army barracks in January 2023 upon realizing he would face criminal charges for sharing classified information with the Middle Eastern country’s intelligence agency.
Whilst in custody, it is claimed that Khalife managed to escape from HMP Wandsworth in September 2023 by attaching himself to the underside of a food delivery truck using bedsheets. Woolwich Crown Court was told that in November 2021, Khalife made anonymous calls to MI5, indicating his willingness to cooperate with British security services. He stated that he had been communicating with Iran for over two years and believed he could assist MI5.
During one call to MI5 in November 2021, Khalife mentioned providing Iranian intelligence with false data sourced from WikiLeaks to mislead them. He explained that he had faked the information to appease the Iranians and had even received money from them in a concealed manner. Khalife expressed concerns about his safety, mentioning that the Iranians had detailed information about his family and whereabouts.
The court heard how Khalife claimed that everything he had given to the Iranians was fabricated and derived from publicly available sources like WikiLeaks. Despite his efforts to mislead, he continued to engage with Iranian intelligence officials. Khalife provided the operator with a phone number and requested further communication after 5pm, but never received a response after reporting his interactions with Iran to MI5.
In a second call to MI5 later that November, Khalife offered to provide evidence via email to support his claims. He admitted to attempting to establish his own intelligence operation after being informed he was ineligible for higher-level vetting within the Army. The accused faces charges related to gathering and disseminating information potentially beneficial to Iran, a bomb hoax, and seeking personal information about armed forces members for terrorist purposes.
Daniel Khalife denies all charges against him, including escaping from custody, and the trial is ongoing.
