Ribbon tributes for baby loss awareness week are taking place at South Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters in Hamilton. The poignant memorial allows loved ones who have suffered the devastating loss of a baby to tie pink, white, and blue ribbons to the railings at the Almada Street building. This initiative is part of the current baby loss awareness week, running until Tuesday, October 15. As a gesture of support, Hamilton town house will also be illuminated in blue and pink during this week, along with NHS Lanarkshire’s three acute hospitals.
Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, leading the ribbon tribute at the council headquarters, shared her personal connection to the cause as her daughter Carys was born asleep. She expressed her hope that the initiative would encourage conversations about baby loss and provide bereaved parents and families with a platform to remember their precious babies. The act of marking the existence of a lost baby is crucial, regardless of the stage of pregnancy when the loss occurred.
Hamilton encouraged those affected by baby loss to visit the display and pay tribute to their child by tying a ribbon or leaving a personal message. Blue, pink, and white ribbons, along with pens for messages, are available at the railings outside the council building. Additionally, virtual ribbons can be placed online for those unable to visit in person. The initiative aims to offer comfort to grieving families and contribute to breaking the stigma surrounding baby loss.
The public display of ribbons outside the council building is intended to be a meaningful and inclusive way to honour lost babies. The initiative not only provides solace to parents but also extends support to their wider families. Those interested in participating are encouraged to join the tribute and remember their precious child, regardless of how much time has passed since their loss.
The ribbon tributes for baby loss awareness week serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of acknowledging and commemorating the lives of lost babies. This initiative not only offers support to grieving families but also helps in raising awareness about the impact of baby loss in the community.
