Former riders and speedway enthusiasts gathered at the popular annual speedway day at Summerlee heritage museum in Coatbridge. This year’s event drew over 550 visitors who had the opportunity to admire a vintage display featuring 14 different bikes, including Weslakes and Jawa models provided by former riders Ronnie Anderson, Brian Collins, James Culbert, William Richardson, and Alex Weir. The event also saw the presence of speedway stars like members of the Coatbridge Tigers team from the 1970s, as well as former riders from Berwick and Glasgow Tigers.
Organised by the Speedway Memories group, a memorabilia display was set up for attendees to reminisce about the sport’s Lanarkshire era, which included race meetings at various stadiums in Coatbridge, Blantyre, and Motherwell. The display included race jackets, programmes, badges, and old photos, with race footage shown on big screens at the venue. The success of the event has already sparked excitement for next year’s edition, following the popularity of their monthly memories group meetings and the Cinder Kings exhibition.
Event organiser John Houston expressed gratitude to Summerlee’s development officer David McDonald and manager Lu McNair for their support in coordinating this year’s successful speedway day. With plans already underway for next year, fans and participants eagerly await the continuation of this established annual event that celebrates speedway history and nostalgia at Summerlee museum in Coatbridge.
