A Texan man arrested in Las Vegas in connection with a deadly shooting rampage across Nevada and Arizona in November 2020 has pleaded guilty to multiple charges. Christopher McDonnell, aged 32, entered his guilty plea for 23 felonies, including murder, attempted murder, and weapon charges. He had initially faced 55 counts, with his trial due to commence next month, but a plea agreement saw some charges dropped.
According to court records from Clark County District Court, McDonnell’s guilty plea includes charges of murder conspiracy and being in unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon. McDonnell’s attorney, Ryan Bashor, stated that his client chose to take responsibility for his actions. The potential sentence for McDonnell ranges from a minimum of 21 years to a maximum of 164 years, with prosecutor Michael Schwartzer indicating they would seek a term beyond McDonnell’s natural life.
McDonnell remains in custody without bail in Las Vegas, with his sentencing scheduled for December 13. His plea agreement does not require him to testify in the upcoming trial of his former wife, Kayleigh Lewis, 29, and his older brother, Shawn McDonnell, 34. Shawn faces 54 felony charges, potentially including the death penalty, while Lewis faces 53 felony charges, excluding the death penalty possibility. Both are also in custody without bail.
The series of shootings, which took place over 11 hours, commenced on November 26, 2020, resulting in the death of Kevin Mendiola Jr. at a convenience store near Las Vegas. The rampage also involved multiple other shootings, leaving several individuals wounded. The perpetrators, originally from Tyler, Texas, were apprehended following a pursuit that ended in Arizona.
The trio’s extradition to Las Vegas in March 2021 led to a grand jury indictment. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson described the crimes as “heinous and random” terrorist acts intending to instil fear in the public. The severity of the incident has raised substantial concerns and attracted widespread attention and scrutiny.
