State officials in California have made the decision to reject SpaceX’s plans for further rocket launches in the state. This move comes in the wake of Elon Musk’s recent highly “aggressive” involvement in the US presidential race, prompting concerns about the nature of the company’s activities.
The California Coastal Commission turned down SpaceX’s proposal to increase rocket launches to as many as 50 per year. Some officials pointed to Musk’s overt political activities on his social media platform X as a reason behind the decision. Commission Chair Caryl Hart expressed reservations about SpaceX, stating, “We’re dealing with a company, the head of which has aggressively injected himself into the presidential race.”
Commissioner Mike Wilson highlighted the potential implications of Musk’s actions, noting that SpaceX, owned by the world’s wealthiest individual, has control over a vast communications system. He referenced Musk’s recent political statements and his involvement in supporting former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
In recent weeks, Musk’s alignment with Trump’s campaign has become more pronounced, with the Tesla CEO openly endorsing the former president’s views on various issues. Musk has also criticised the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for its response to natural disasters, further intensifying his political stance.
Concerns have been raised about Musk’s increasing involvement in the presidential race and his public endorsements. While military officials have worked to address environmental concerns related to further rocket launches, the commission emphasised the importance of SpaceX representatives obtaining permits for the company’s operations.
Commissioner Gretchen Newsom pointed out Musk’s contradictory actions, such as criticising FEMA while claiming to support hurricane victims by providing free internet access. The commission stressed the necessity for SpaceX to follow the correct permit procedures to move forward with its rocket program.
