Harris’ doctor reports she’s in ‘excellent health.’ Her campaign wants to draw a contrast with Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris has received a glowing bill of health from her doctor, who stated that she is in “excellent health” and possesses both the physical and mental resilience necessary to serve as president. Dr. Joshua Simmons, a U.S. Army colonel and Harris’ physician, released a letter summarizing her medical history and current status, affirming that she leads a healthy and active lifestyle. The Vice President’s most recent physical examination in April was described as “unremarkable” by Dr. Simmons, who has been her primary care physician for the past 3 1/2 years.

In a two-page letter, Dr. Simmons emphasised that Harris has the required physical and mental capabilities to fulfil the duties of the Presidency effectively, including serving as Chief Executive, Head of State, and Commander in Chief. Harris’ campaign aims to utilise this positive health assessment to draw a contrast with former President Donald Trump, who has been known to provide limited information about his health over the years, casting doubts on his fitness to serve in office.

Unlike Trump, Harris has been transparent about her medical history, with Simmons noting that she has a history of allergies and hives, for which she has been receiving treatment for the past three years. The report also revealed that Harris wears contact lenses for mild nearsightedness and stays up to date on preventive care measures, including regular screenings like colonoscopies and mammograms. The Vice President’s family history includes maternal colon cancer.

As Harris’ office released the medical report, her campaign used the opportunity to underscore recent media reports questioning Trump’s health and cognitive abilities, highlighting his reluctance to disclose comprehensive health information. Trump, in turn, has been vocal about questioning President Joe Biden’s health during the election campaign, and now that Harris is on the ticket, attention has turned to Trump’s own health status.

Last November, Trump released a letter from his physician affirming his “excellent” physical and mental health, though the letter lacked specific details or test results. With contrasting approaches to health transparency, Harris’ campaign intends to draw attention to the differences in how the two political figures handle their health disclosures, potentially influencing voters’ perceptions.

The spotlight on Harris’ health comes amidst growing concerns over transparency and accountability in political leadership, with both candidates’ health records under scrutiny. As the 2024 election season unfolds, the debate around health and fitness for office is poised to remain a point of contention and comparison between political candidates.
