China has conducted a fresh round of military exercises around Taiwan, encircling the island and its surrounding territories following a National Day address by President Lai Ching-te that seemingly provoked Beijing. The People’s Liberation Army announced on Monday that they were commencing “joint assaults” involving their land, naval, air, and rocket forces to practice various combat maneuvers. These included drills such as combat readiness patrols, blockades of key ports and areas, assaults on maritime and ground targets, and the establishment of comprehensive superiority.
The PLA Eastern Theatre Command stated that the exercises served as a “stern warning to the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan Independence’ forces”. Taiwan was on high alert as President Lai had recently stated that China had no authority to represent Taiwan, affirming that Taiwan would resist any attempts of annexation. The Mainland Affairs Council in Taiwan viewed the speech as an extension of goodwill and expressed a willingness to work together with the Chinese communists to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.
Joseph Wu, the national security council secretary general in Taiwan, condemned the use of military force to threaten other countries, highlighting the importance of peacefully resolving disputes in line with the United Nations charter. The Chinese military did not specify the duration of the drills, which did not involve live-fire exercises as seen in past events. The drills, known as “Joint Sword 2024 B”, were being conducted in nine different areas surrounding Taiwan.
Taiwan’s defence ministry strongly denounced the PLA’s actions as irrational and provocative and reiterated its commitment to defending the island’s sovereignty. In response to the military exercises, the ministry reported the deployment of appropriate forces to safeguard Taiwan’s territories. The US, following China’s activities around Taiwan, labelled President Lai’s speech as routine and urged China to act with restraint to maintain peace and stability in the region.
China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and frequently sends military aircraft and warships near Taiwan to intimidate its population and armed forces. The recent military drills serve as a testament to the ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan regarding sovereignty and independence issues. The situation remains sensitive as both sides navigate their positions amidst escalating military activities.
