Dean Henderson Ensures Family Watches His First England Start with Chartered Flight
England goalkeeper Dean Henderson went above and beyond to ensure his family could witness his first start for the national team against Finland. The Crystal Palace goalie stepped in for Jordan Pickford in England’s 3-1 Nations League victory, marking his first full appearance for his country after making his debut four years ago as a substitute in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland.
Henderson, who is currently mourning the loss of his father, received news that he would be playing on the eve of the match. This short notice prompted him to arrange a chartered flight for his mother, brother, girlfriend, and girlfriend’s father to travel to Helsinki to watch the game. Despite the emotional turmoil of not having his father present, Henderson was determined to have his family by his side for this significant moment in his career.
Reflecting on the experience, Henderson shared, “My old man, unfortunately, we lost him in the summer. So it’d have been great for him to be here to watch me. So it’s been emotional.” He added, “I did [arrange the flight] just because I knew that it was such a big thing for the family. I didn’t want them to miss it. So I was delighted they made it. It was fantastic, they were emotional in the stand. I could see that.”
In addition to the emotional strain of his personal loss, Henderson also faced the tragic passing of his former Sheffield United teammate, George Baldock, who drowned in a swimming pool in Athens. The sudden loss deeply affected Henderson, who described feeling numb and at a loss for words. Remembering Baldock as a key figure in their team and community, Henderson expressed his shock and sadness over the untimely tragedy.
Looking ahead, Henderson is focused on returning to his duties at Crystal Palace, where the team is striving for their first league win of the season. With the departure of fellow goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to Wolves, Henderson has taken on the role of number one at the club. Reflecting on the challenges of sharing the goalkeeper position, he remarked, “I always thought it would [help], but it never does.”
