A man from Renfrewshire has been sentenced to jail after he threatened a family member and subjected his ex-partner to domestic abuse. Jamie Collins engaged in a disturbing pattern of behaviour towards his ex-partner and a family member over a period of nearly two years. The 33-year-old sent abusive and threatening text messages, made violent threats, and posted disturbing content on social media between October 2022 and May 2024.
During a court hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court, it was revealed that Collins faced charges of domestic abuse and causing fear or alarm to another woman. The court heard that on October 7, 2023, Collins went to a nail salon in Johnstone where a woman was having an appointment. He threatened to harm her and waited outside the salon for her. Subsequently, on February 11, 2024, Collins blocked the same woman’s car, made threatening gestures, and later physically assaulted her vehicle.
Collins continued his harassment by sending intimidating messages and making alarming statements towards the woman on several occasions. In one incident on February 24, he sent a message implying harm and surveillance, causing the woman to fear for her safety. He also verbally threatened the woman in a public place, demonstrating a pattern of abusive behaviour.
The court also heard that Collins had a history of posting derogatory comments about his ex-partner on social media, including disturbing references to violence. In one instance, he shared a news story about violence with a threatening caption aimed at his former partner. These actions led to his arrest after the matter was reported to the police.
During the court proceedings, defence agent Terry Gallanagh stated that Collins regretted his actions and acknowledged the frightening impact of his behaviour. Despite claiming that Collins lacked intelligence, Gallanagh emphasised his client’s remorse and acceptance of the consequences. Sheriff Gillian Craig, however, criticised Collins for his menacing conduct and issued a 16-month prison sentence, backdated to his remand in May 2024.
In addition to the jail term, a five-year non-harassment order was imposed on Collins, prohibiting any contact or communication with both victims. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of domestic abuse and the lasting consequences of threatening and abusive behaviour towards others. The sentencing serves as a warning against such harmful actions and underscores the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
