A pregnant woman is puzzled by the reaction of her close friends and family to her chosen baby name, which she thought was really “cute”. The mum-to-be, who is seven months pregnant, has been left surprised by the lack of positive responses to the name. Most people either fall “silent” or offer “blank stares, or bewilderment” upon hearing the name. This has taken the expectant mother and her husband aback, as they believed the name was a sweet tribute to a grandmother.
The husband’s grandmother was named Marlys, so they decided to give their baby girl a modern twist by choosing Marley. The couple have been open about the name and have shared their excitement for baby Marley’s arrival – but their friends and relatives seem thoroughly unimpressed with the name. On Reddit, the mum asked: “Does this name actually suck?” and explained: “We decided to name her Marley because my husbandâs grandmother was named Marlys. We thought it was a cute, modernised version of her name.”
She added humorously: “As the icing on the cake weâre both big fans of âA Muppet Christmas Carolâ so this way we can sing “weâre Marley and Marley WhoOoOo!” whenever we want.” The post was met with more than 2,200 replies from fellow Reddit users keen to share their thoughts. One person said: âItâs not a bad or sucky name but it reminds me of the sad dog movie, Marley & Me.â This particular response garnered 2,900 likes from people seeming to agree with that line of thinking.
Another said: âThatâs where my mind went, too. Like itâs not a horrible name, itâs just linked to the film in my brain,” while a third was a fan of the name choice and commented: âI think it’s a totally cute name for a girl and a song to sing to and then with her. I love it!â But another, referencing the film Marley & Me and its origins, said: âMarley is a rambunctious and cheeky Golden Retriever. You are probably too young to remember the book or the movie, but for the rest of us, the name is an immediate dead dog moment.â
Others agreed the name was more appropriate for a dog than a child. One person simply said: âYeah sounds like a dog name to me,” which prompted a fellow Reddit user to point out: âAnd yet there are so many names for dogs that are top 100 names for girls Sophie, Ellie, Luna and Lucy, anyone?â In a follow-up response, the expectant mother added: âWow!
