Si King of the popular cooking show “Hairy Bikers” has revealed that he has been struggling to cope after the passing of his co-star Dave Myers. The news of Myers’ death at the age of 66 due to cancer in February has left King feeling lost. The duo, known for their love of motorcycles and cooking, created a series of shows together that aired on various channels including BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 5, and Good Food.
Having been creative partners and best friends, King and Myers shared a special bond that extended beyond just their work on screen. Myers’s battle with cancer was announced in 2022, and their final show aired shortly after his passing. King, aged 57, expressed in an interview with The Sunday Times that he has been grappling with the idea of escaping from his grief by riding off into the sunset, but ultimately decided to honour Myers by moving forward with his life.
“The past few months have been a struggle,” King shared. “More than once I was on the verge of jumping on my bike and heading into the sunset. Not tell anyone where I was going. Just clear off and never come back.” He also mentioned feeling rage towards the disease and questioning his faith during this difficult period.
Reflecting on his loss, King spoke about following Myers’ wishes to keep moving forward and not dwell on the past. He acknowledged the need to take time to contemplate the life he shared with his best mate and consider his next steps. In an interview published in The Observer in June, King discussed the challenges of continuing without Myers and ruled out the possibility of a rebooted version of “Hairy Bikers”.
He remarked, “It can’t be the Hairy Bikers 2.0. That’s not going to happen. It wouldn’t be respectful.” King emphasized that apart from mourning the loss of his friend, he is also grieving the shared experiences and camaraderie they had built over the years. The TV personality confessed that it has taken him three months post-Myers’ death to even think about his future in terms of his career.
Having relied on Myers as his professional partner, King highlighted the significance of having someone to collaborate with creatively. He expressed, “I need someone to play off. I’m good at unpacking people. I’m genuinely interested in people’s stories.”
The void left by Myers’ passing has undoubtedly reshaped King’s personal and professional life, prompting him to navigate a new chapter without his cherished co-star by his side.
