A Conservative Member of Parliament has faced backlash for making controversial remarks about Kemi Badenoch’s family life, suggesting that she is too focused on her children to be a potential opposition leader. Sir Christopher Chope’s comments have stirred up anger, with critics condemning his views as damaging to women’s advancement in politics.
The Liberal Democrat MP, Alex Brewer, expressed astonishment at Sir Christopher’s remarks, highlighting how they perpetuate outdated attitudes that hinder women’s progress. Speaking on ITV News, Sir Christopher stated, “I think it is important that whoever leads the opposition has an immense amount of time and energy. I understand from talking to colleagues that Kemi spends a lot of time with her family, which I don’t resent at all, but the consequence of it is you can’t spend all your time with your family at the same time as being leader of the opposition.”
Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick, a former immigration minister, are currently vying for support from the Conservative Party membership in a leadership contest. The race is due to conclude at the end of October, with the announcement of the new Conservative Party leader scheduled for early next month.
Reacting to the comments, Lib Dem MP Alex Brewer took to Twitter to criticise Sir Christopher’s stance, emphasising her commitment to achieving gender equality in politics. Labour MP Dawn Butler also condemned the remarks, likening them to the views expressed by a misogynistic influencer. Ms Butler described the comments as “extremely sexist, misogynistic and outdated” and questioned how Kemi Badenoch felt about her colleague’s statements.
