The US Treasury has recently announced sanctions against two Chinese companies involved in producing drone engines and parts. The Biden administration alleges that these companies directly assisted Russia in creating long-range attack drones used in the conflict in Ukraine.
According to senior officials from the Biden administration, these sanctions are part of an effort to target the direct collaboration between Beijing and Moscow in supplying military equipment. The drones produced by China in collaboration with Russian defense firms, known as the Garpiya series long-range attack drone, have been utilised in the destruction of critical infrastructure and have led to significant casualties during the Ukrainian conflict.
While the US accuses China of providing support to Russia’s military activities in Ukraine, Beijing denies supplying weapons to either side and insists that its trade relations with Russia are legitimate and transparent. The sanctioned Chinese companies are Xiamen Limbach Aircraft Engine Company, which manufactures drone engines, and Redlepus Vector Industry, which has partnered with a Russian entity already under sanctions to facilitate the shipment of drones to Russia.
The administration has highlighted that China should have been aware of the problematic nature of the Russian entity, TSK Vektor, and its involvement in the development of long-range attack drones. The sanctions also target Artem Mikhailovich Yamshchikov, a Russian individual identified as the beneficial owner of TSK Vektor, and the Russian entity TD Vector, which has been implicated in aiding these shipments.
These developments underscore the ongoing complexities in international relations and the implications of collaboration between countries in conflicts such as the one in Ukraine. The imposition of sanctions by the US aims to deter such activities and hold accountable those believed to be contributing to destabilising situations.
