Supermarket giants have issued apologies following a clean-up operation along the River Forth, where volunteers from the Stirling and Falkirk Canoe Club dedicated their time to removing abandoned shopping trolleys and other debris from the waterways. Last weekend, the volunteers targeted areas near three bridges, including spots close to Tesco and Sainsbury’s supermarkets in Stirling, managing to extract more than 20 shopping trolleys, seven bikes, and various other discarded items from the river after a strenuous four-hour effort.
James Fleming, one of the volunteers, expressed disappointment in the lack of response from Tesco and Sainsbury’s after delivering letters outlining the clean-up activities and the need for more proactive measures to prevent further trolleys from ending up in the river. In a letter to Tesco, Fleming mentioned plans to return next summer to retrieve the remaining trolleys left in the water.
The group of volunteers not only removed abandoned trolleys but also collected additional waste like traffic cones, emphasising the positive impact of their efforts in restoring the river’s cleanliness. While most of the recovered trolleys seemed to originate from Tesco, a spokesperson from Sainsbury’s assured the use of security measures to deter trolley dumping and retrieval services for any reported abandoned trolleys.
Tesco acknowledged the issue and expressed gratitude towards the volunteers for their contribution to preserving the river’s cleanliness, urging customers to return trolleys and report any abandoned ones through the Trolleywise website or local stores for prompt retrieval. Despite the challenges faced during the clean-up, the volunteers found the work rewarding as they worked together to address an ongoing eyesore that has plagued the river over the years.
