On Friday, Democrat Kamala Harris is set to kick off her day in Grand Rapids before heading to Lansing and Oakland County, located northwest of Detroit. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has his own events planned in Oakland County and Detroit later in the day.
During a recent speech at the annual Al Smith charity dinner in New York, Trump took aim at Harris and other Democrats in a sharp and at times acrimonious manner. Despite the physical distance, Harris virtually participated in the event.
In a new television advert supporting Harris, Grammy Award-winning singer Marc Anthony criticises Trump for his handling of disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico back in 2017. The ad, targeting Latino voters, includes footage of the devastation caused by the hurricane and Trump’s controversial distribution of paper towels during a visit to the island.
Anthony, who is of Puerto Rican descent, highlights Trump’s actions and statements towards Puerto Rico, stressing the importance of remembering the past. Trump’s public disputes with the mayor of San Juan over aid funding and his delayed release of billions in aid to the territory are also mentioned in the ad.
The Harris campaign plans to broadcast the ad on prominent Spanish-language networks during this Sunday’s Billboard Latin Music Awards coverage and in Pennsylvania to reach Latino voters. While residents of Puerto Rico cannot participate in the general election, the Puerto Rican diaspora on the mainland could play a decisive role in the upcoming vote.
