In response to the rising concern of brain injuries among military personnel, the US military is conducting tests to safeguard troops from blasts. During a recent training exercise, US special operations forces witnessed advancements in technologies aimed at mitigating the impact of blasts, which have increasingly led to brain injuries within the military.
Retired Sgt. Maj. F. Bowling, a former special operations medic now working as a contractor, highlighted the significance of these studies, noting the strong interest and participation from personnel. The Defence Department lacks accurate data on troops affected by blast overpressure issues, which are more challenging to detect compared to traumatic brain injuries that have been more widely acknowledged.
According to the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence, over 20,000 service members were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries last year, with over 500,000 diagnoses since 2000. Pentagon spokesperson Josh Wick emphasised the adverse effects linked to blast exposure, ranging from sleep disturbances to cognitive decline, headaches and dizziness.
Gen. Bryan Fenton of US Special Operations Command stressed their commitment to understanding the impacts of blast overpressure on troops’ brain health and collaborating with experts to develop effective mitigation strategies. The integration of cutting-edge technologies is crucial in minimising the effects of repeated exposures faced by military personnel.
At Fort Liberty in North Carolina, Army special forces utilised an innovatively shaped breaching charge to direct blasts more precisely and diminish harmful shockwaves. The reduction in blast overpressure has shown significant promise in enhancing troops’ safety during training exercises.
Ongoing research includes the evaluation of various blast sensors to assess troops’ exposure levels and the potential distribution of these sensors across the force in the coming years. Col. Amanda Robbins highlighted the distinction between acute traumatic brain injuries and long-term blast exposure, underscoring the need for further study to comprehend the complexities of repetitive blast exposure on the human brain.
Special Operations Command is considering implementing routine testing throughout service members’ careers, emphasising the importance of early identification of potential issues for timely intervention. Additionally, new recruits are required to undergo cognitive assessments as part of the Defence Department’s efforts to protect troops from brain injuries resulting from blast exposures. The ultimate goal is to ensure the cognitive well-being and operational effectiveness of military personnel in the long term.
