Akron has agreed to pay $4.8 million to the relatives of a Black man who was fatally shot by police officers in a tragic incident. This settlement comes after the family of Jayland Walker accused the officers of using excessive force and being part of a culture of violence and racism within the Akron police department. Despite a grand jury deciding not to indict the officers involved, the city has taken the step to compensate the family for their loss.
The incident, which took place on June 27, 2022, unfolded during a routine traffic stop that escalated into a high-stakes chase ending in Walker being shot 46 times by eight officers. The use of such extreme force sparked public outrage, leading to protests and strained relations between the community and law enforcement. The officers claimed that Walker fired a shot from his vehicle before attempting to escape on foot.
In response to the tragedy, Akron officials have announced ongoing discussions with Walker’s family and the community to implement changes in police procedures. One key reform includes revising the vehicle pursuit policy to prevent officers from engaging in high-speed chases for minor infractions such as equipment violations. The family’s legal representatives have emphasised that the settlement is not just about financial compensation but also about driving meaningful policy reforms within the police department.
An investigation by the state found that Walker, aged 25, disregarded orders to halt and show his hands, eventually making a movement towards his waistband that led the officers to believe he posed a threat. While the state’s report supported the officers’ actions, Walker’s lawyers have disputed this narrative, arguing that the investigation was biased in favour of law enforcement. They contest claims that Walker aimed his gun at the officers when he fired from his car, asserting that the weapon was not directed at anyone.
Following the incident, the eight officers involved were initially placed on leave, then assigned to desk duties before being reinstated to active duty.
