Three Iowa police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing in a fatal shooting following a traffic stop by a county attorney. The shooting occurred after a man, identified as Joshua Green, opened fire on two officers during the early hours of September 16 in Des Moines.
Polk County Attorney Kimberly Graham stated that her investigation into the incident, which involved reviewing dashcam and body camera footage, concluded that the officers’ actions were deemed justified in response to the threat posed by Green. The two officers who were shot during the altercation managed to survive and have since been discharged from the hospital.
The sequence of events unfolded when the officers pulled over a vehicle driven by Green around 1:40 a.m. for an equipment violation. Green attempted to flee briefly before colliding with a truck. Additional officers arrived at the scene and tried to apprehend Green using a Taser and extract him from his car. It was during this confrontation that Green brandished a handgun and began firing in the direction of the officers.
In response to the imminent danger, three officers discharged their weapons, resulting in Green being fatally wounded. The incident underscores the split-second decisions law enforcement officers often face in high-pressure situations.
