Dacia Sandero, Europe’s Best-Selling Car, Set to Go Electric
In a significant move towards sustainability in the automotive industry, Dacia CEO Denis Le Vot has confirmed that the next generation of Europe’s best-selling car, the Dacia Sandero, will be going electric. However, this electric version is not expected to hit the market until 2027.
Dacia, the value brand of the Renault Group, currently offers only one electric car in its lineup, the Dacia Spring priced at £14,995. Speaking at the Paris Motor Show, Le Vot announced that electrification is on the horizon for the entire range, with the popular Sandero next in line for a fully electric makeover.
Le Vot explained that as part of the Renault Group, Dacia relies on technology from other vehicles within the group and must align its electrification plans accordingly. He stated, “Renault as a brand is moving quicker in terms of electrification. Dacia is not standing still – it’s progressing. Our next focus will be the electrification of the next-generation Sandero, expected by the end of 2027.”
Although Dacia is now working on developing cars in a much faster timeframe, Le Vot mentioned that the actual work on the new Sandero will not commence for at least another twelve months. Decisions regarding which Renault Group technology Dacia will incorporate will follow after this initial period.
Furthermore, Le Vot hinted at Dacia’s exploration of Renault Group’s Mobilize mobility models, such as the compact Duo, a four-wheeled scooter that serves as a successor to the popular Renault Twizzy. This model was recently unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. Le Vot expressed, “We are considering various car sizes and scanning the potential options before making a decision.”
Dacia has been gathering valuable insights into electric car usage from current Dacia owners. Le Vot shared that these owners typically cover an average distance of 37km (23 miles) across five trips, making the electric car a popular choice within families. He also suggested that a cheaper version of the Spring, featuring a smaller battery, could attract a significant number of buyers given the current usage patterns.
Overall, Dacia’s move towards electrification signifies a major step towards a greener future in the automotive world. As the brand continues to evolve and incorporate electric technologies, it is expected to make a significant impact on the market in the coming years.
