The New York Liberty made history by winning their first WNBA championship title, defeating the Minnesota Lynx with a score of 67-62 in a thrilling Game 5 that went into overtime on Sunday night.
Led by Jonquel Jones who scored 17 points, the Liberty secured their long-awaited victory. Despite being one of the original WNBA franchises and reaching the Finals five times before, they had never clinched the title until now. This win marks a significant moment for the team and the city of New York, as it is their first basketball championship since the Knicks’ NBA win in 1973.
In a tense overtime period, players like Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally stepped up for the Liberty, making crucial plays that extended their lead and energised the crowd. Although stars Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu faced challenges on offense, the team rallied together to secure the win.
Minnesota struggled to score in overtime, with Kayla McBride being their only player to make free throws. Despite a last attempt by Bridget Carleton, the Lynx couldn’t catch up to the Liberty’s lead. Breanna Stewart sealed the victory for New York with two successful free throws in the final seconds.
Napheesa Collier’s 22 points led the Lynx, but her fouling out with 13 seconds left in overtime hindered Minnesota’s chances of a comeback.
The atmosphere was electric as the clock ran down, with players celebrating and confetti raining down from the rafters. This victory cements the New York Liberty’s place in WNBA history and marks a memorable moment for the team and their fans.
