Two transgender women were brutally stabbed to death at their home in northwest Pakistan, in a tragic incident highlighting the escalating violence against transgender individuals in the country. The attack, carried out by two armed men wielding daggers, occurred in Mardan, a conservative city in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to local police chief Fahim Khan.
The motive behind the killings remains unclear as investigations are ongoing. The victims were laid to rest at a local graveyard following the heinous crime. While two suspects have been apprehended in connection with the murders, details surrounding their involvement have not been disclosed by the authorities.
Transgender people in Pakistan often face harassment, abuse, and targeted attacks, with some becoming victims of so-called honor killings perpetrated by their own relatives in response to perceived sexual transgressions. Despite the enactment of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act by the Pakistani parliament in 2018 to safeguard the rights of transgender citizens, societal attitudes towards gender and sexuality remain deeply entrenched.
