Simple four-ingredient breakfast can help reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol

A new study suggests that a simple four-ingredient breakfast may hold the key to reducing high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The Mediterranean diet, known for its heart-healthy benefits, has long been recommended by nutritionists. This diet focuses on grains, veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and heart-friendly fats like olive oil. By incorporating elements of diets from Mediterranean countries like Italy and Greece, this diet promotes weight loss, heart health, and diabetes prevention.

The British Heart Foundation’s nutrition lead, Tracey Parker, lauds the Mediterranean diet for its health benefits. She recommends a simplified version of this diet that is easy to follow without requiring a long list of ingredients. For breakfast, she suggests Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit, nuts, and seeds. Lunch could consist of lentil soup with wholegrain bread, while dinner may include baked salmon with brown rice and mixed vegetables. Healthy snack options between meals include hummus, vegetables, fruits, or nuts.

Studies from Harvard Health indicate that the Mediterranean diet can help reduce the risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, certain cancers, and even depression. Recommendations include limiting red meat intake, choosing chicken and fish, avoiding sugary drinks, and reducing high-fat, high-sugar desserts. However, individuals considering major dietary changes should consult their healthcare provider as adjustments to medication may be necessary.

NHS University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust also support the Mediterranean diet for its benefits on gut bacteria balance, mood, and sleep quality. They caution that the high fibre content of this diet may cause bloating, gas, or changes in bowel habits. To manage these symptoms, it is advised to gradually increase intake of vegetables, fruits, grains, and pulses over several weeks while staying hydrated. Consulting a doctor or healthcare team before significant dietary changes is recommended to ensure optimal health outcomes.
