A court says former Albanian president Meta must stay in custody during corruption investigation

An Albanian court has made a ruling that former President Ilir Meta must remain in custody amidst an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption, money laundering, and concealing personal income and property. The decision was made by a judge from the Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime, a body that handles cases involving high-ranking political and state officials. While formal criminal charges have not yet been filed, Meta could face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of the accusations.

Meta, who served as president from 2017 to 2022 and is known for his opposition to current Prime Minister Edi Rama, has vehemently denied the charges, labelling them as a politically motivated attack on him as an opposition leader. His political party, the Freedom Party, has aligned itself with the anti-government opposition coalition against Rama’s Socialist Party. Meta has criticised the current government, accusing it of establishing a “kleptocratic regime” and centralising power in the hands of Prime Minister Rama.

Following his arrest in Tirana, Meta took to Facebook to express his belief in his innocence, while his party’s secretary-general described the event as a “criminal kidnapping.” Meta’s former spouse, Monika Kryemadhi, who is a lawmaker and ex-leader of the Freedom Party, has also been implicated in the same allegations and has been ordered to regularly report to the authorities. Additionally, two other individuals are under investigation in connection to the case.

Prosecutors claim that during his tenure as the Minister of Economy, Trade and Energy, Meta misused his position to benefit financially from various businesses. They also allege that prior to assuming the presidency in 2017, Meta failed to properly account for approximately $460,000 (423,000 euros) that he utilised for lobbying activities in the United States. Albania, striving for European Union membership, has long struggled with corruption, hindering its progress in democratic, economic, and social development.

With the support of the EU and the US, the country has established new judicial institutions which have initiated numerous inquiries into former high-ranking government officials suspected of involvement in corrupt practices.

In summary, the former Albanian president’s arrest and detention highlight the challenges the country faces in combating corruption and upholding the rule of law. This case underscores the importance of a robust judiciary and effective anti-corruption measures in safeguarding democratic principles and fostering sustainable development.
