The body of a missing employee at Elon Musk’s SpaceX was discovered washed up on a Texas beach, concluding a 24-hour search for the individual. The employee, Kevin Edward Escobar, was last seen on Sunday morning, when he went swimming at Boca Chica Beach accompanied by his coworkers. A distress call was made by one of the SpaceX employees to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, reporting that Escobar was struggling to swim back to shore from 50 yards out. Despite a fellow SpaceX employee’s attempt to rescue him, he disappeared beneath the water’s surface, as per local outlet ValleyCentral.
Following the distress call, the US Coast Guard initiated search efforts using boat and helicopter crews to locate Escobar. Despite an extensive 18-hour search, the Coast Guard handed over the search operations to local authorities on Monday after no sign of Escobar was found, reported USA Today. Tragically, Escobar’s body was found washed up on the same beach he went missing at around 6:30 p.m. local time on Monday. The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the family of the deceased had been informed, with a Justice of the Peace and a funeral home being summoned to the location.
Boca Chica beach, situated at the southern tip of Texas along the Gulf Coast, serves as a commercial launch site for SpaceX. James Farris, a public information officer for the Coast Guard Corpus Christi sector, emphasized the importance of boater and water safety in light of this tragedy. Farris stressed the necessity of wearing life jackets and having communication devices when out on the water, as well as checking weather conditions before entering the sea.
