During an interview with Sky News, Reed emphasised that there was no direct involvement of any water company in offering him the tickets, nor were there any discussions related to water during the event where the tickets were received. He firmly stated that the acceptance of tickets from a telecoms company did not compromise his dedication to environmental issues, highlighting his proactive actions against water companies for their accountability and performance.
In an ITV interview, Reed reiterated that the tickets were given by Hutchison 3G UK and not by a water company. He defended his stance by pointing out his strong track record in addressing water sector challenges, including initiating stringent measures against water companies and establishing a commission to overhaul the sector.
Public records indicate that Reed was gifted a ticket to the Chelsea v Crystal Palace match with hospitality in December 2023, provided by Hutchison 3G UK Limited. It is noteworthy that CK Hutchison Holdings Limited, the parent company of Hutchison 3G UK, is also associated with Northumbrian Water Group through intermediate holding companies.
Earlier this year, Ofwat chief executive David Black criticised the pollution records of Northumbrian Water and two other companies as a “catalogue of failure”. Reed’s transparency in declaring the source of the tickets and his firm stance on holding water companies accountable reflect his commitment to addressing environmental issues and ensuring corporate responsibility within the sector.
