Blantyre Library Set to Relocate to Leisure Centre in Spring 2025
In an effort to streamline services and save costs, Blantyre Library will soon be moving into the local leisure centre, with completion expected by late March 2025. As part of South Lanarkshire’s reprovisioning programme, plans have been unveiled to create a new book-lending area within the leisure centre on Glasgow Road, complete with self-service kiosks. This move will see the library shift out of its current location at Clydeview Shopping Centre.
According to council officials, the new library space will boast extended opening hours to align with the leisure centre operational times, although the number of staffed hours is likely to decrease. The revamp will involve the removal of walls, installation of glazed screens, doorways, and windows to transform a section of the leisure centre into a modern library facility.
David Booth, the council’s executive director of community and enterprise resources, highlighted that the revamped library area will offer a range of services, including free Wi-Fi, photocopying, and activities for children. The new space will operate alongside the leisure centre, providing accessibility even outside traditional library hours through a self-service kiosk for book transactions.
