Brazen Thief Steals £29k Diamond Ring Haul from Scots Shopping Centre
An audacious thief made off with a haul of diamond rings worth £29,000 from a jewellery shop in Renfrewshire. Jack Duff, along with another male accomplice, carried out the robbery at Ernest Jones in Braehead Shopping Centre in August last year. The 19-year-old waited for sales staff to be occupied with other customers before seizing the opportunity to swipe multiple diamond rings from the counter. Not content with one theft, Duff returned to the cabinet a second time to grab even more rings, but left the drawer open, catching the attention of a vigilant shop worker who raised the alarm.
During a hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court, it was revealed by procurator fiscal depute Abbey McKenna that on August 21, the accused and his accomplice entered the store around 5.45pm. The theft was only noticed about ten minutes later when a shop assistant discovered the missing rings. The shop’s CCTV footage helped police identify Duff, and it was reported that the stolen rings were never recovered.
The court was informed that Duff, from Leithland Road, Glasgow, will return to Paisley Sheriff Court for sentencing on November 22. His defence agent requested for reports to be prepared and reserved mitigation. Sheriff Amel Elfallah considered the case to be serious and deferred sentencing for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment. Duff had his bail order continued in the meantime.
In a separate incident, there were reports of a major road closure due to a lorry catching fire on the A77, causing diversions for motorists in the area. Additionally, holidaymakers in Spain were warned of rare storm alerts affecting the region, including the Balearic Islands.
