Budget 2024: Martin Lewis reacts asking ‘where will that money come from’

In response to the Labour budget for 2024, money expert Martin Lewis has raised concerns about the funding for a key announcement. The Chancellor’s recent declaration highlighted significant changes to national insurance for employers, with larger businesses set to contribute 15 percent from April 2025. Labour’s Rachel Reeves stated that the burden would fall on those with the most resources. However, Lewis questions how businesses will manage a £615 per employee increase. He emphasised the impact of altering the threshold for National Insurance payments and raised the question of where the additional funds would come from – whether from profits, raised charges, or reduced salaries and benefits. Lewis highlighted that small businesses would not be affected as the Employers Allowance for NI has been increased.

Lewis had expressed reservations prior to the government announcement, stressing the importance of addressing issues such as the winter fuel payment cut. He described the budget as one of the most stringent he’s seen in a while, particularly with implications for the country’s most vulnerable individuals. Following discussions with the Chancellor, Lewis presented proposed changes involving key areas like the winter fuel payment, carer’s allowance, energy bills, and childcare, among others. He underscored the need for a fair and effective financial system and the feasibility of his suggestions not requiring significant expenditure.

The Labour budget announcement has led to mixed reactions, with concerns raised by experts like Martin Lewis about the practical implications and sources of funding for key initiatives. The discussions around budget allocations and financial adjustments indicate a dynamic fiscal landscape, prompting further scrutiny and analysis to ensure economic stability and social welfare. Lewis’s insights shed light on the intricacies of budget planning and the need for transparent and sustainable financial strategies to support diverse societal needs.
