A black cocker spaniel fell from a cliff in Penicuik, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation involving the police and Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Teams. The incident occurred at around 4:50 pm on Tuesday at Roslin Glen, leading to a frantic effort to locate the beloved pet. Volunteers from Tweed Valley, local Penicuik crews, fire services, and a water rescue team all joined forces to find the dog. The challenging search was complicated by the dog’s dark fur and the tree canopy that hindered visibility, especially as night descended. Despite hours of searching, the operation was suspended overnight. Tragically, the dog was discovered deceased by its owner the following morning, with a passerby assisting in retrieving its body.
Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue urged the public to be cautious during walks, especially as the evenings grow darker post-clock change. A spokesperson highlighted the difficulties faced during the search due to the dog’s colour blending with the surroundings. They emphasised the importance of personal safety and preparedness, especially in winter, reminding walkers to consider the risks involved and to carry essential items like torches and fully charged mobile phones.
The volunteers at Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue, who are all working professionals, reiterated their commitment to responding to incidents involving lost, missing, or injured individuals, as well as animals. With the onset of darker evenings, they stressed the need for increased awareness and precautions during outdoor activities.
