Callous Fraudster Who Scammed Pensioners in £25k Virgin Money Bank Scam Gets Jail Term
A callous fraudster has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for an audacious banking scam that targeted an elderly couple. Paul McEnhill, aged 28, managed to trick Thomas Docherty, 73, and Margaret Baillie, 82, into transferring thousands of pounds in a deceitful scheme amounting to £25,000. The incident occurred when Docherty, from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, received a phone call from an individual claiming to be the head of Virgin Money’s CID department. The caller alleged that £5,000 had been unlawfully taken from Docherty’s account and instructed him to transfer £4,900 to assist in identifying an employee who had stolen the funds. Subsequently, Docherty was coerced into transferring an additional £9,500 from his wife’s account under false pretences.
The deceitful nature of the transactions raised suspicion among bank staff, prompting them to alert the authorities in October 2022. McEnhill, hailing from Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire, confessed to the fraud during a court appearance at Hamilton Sheriff Court, where he acknowledged obtaining a total of £24,140 from his victims. Sheriff John Speir, presiding over the case, deemed imprisonment as the only viable outcome and condemned the scheme as “callous and calculated.” The court heard that McEnhill persistently manipulated Docherty by fabricating scenarios of further funds being misappropriated and coercing him and his wife into transferring money under false premises. Fortunately, £9,500 has been reimbursed to Docherty following the discovery of McEnhill’s banking details used during the transactions.
In his defence, Eamonn McGeehan stated that McEnhill was compelled to engage in the fraudulent activities due to an overwhelming drug debt, albeit lacking a full comprehension of the scheme’s ramifications. Expressing regret and embarrassment, McEnhill acknowledged the severity of his actions, acknowledging that imprisonment was warranted. Sheriff Speir admonished McEnhill for inflicting financial and psychological distress upon his elderly victims, emphasising the detrimental impact on their mental well-being and financial security. Virgin Money declined to provide a statement regarding the incident.
In conclusion, the case serves as a poignant reminder of the prevalence of financial scams targeting vulnerable individuals, highlighting the importance of vigilance and caution when dealing with unsolicited communications or requests for financial transactions. It underscores the necessity for stringent measures to combat fraudulent activities and protect individuals, particularly the elderly, from falling victim to such deceitful schemes.
