Stirling University Academics Participate in Premiere of Investigative Documentary on Perfume Industry

Academics from Stirling University are gearing up to join in the inaugural screening of a new BBC documentary shedding light on the ‘dark secrets’ of the perfume industry. The screening of the documentary will take place at the Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling, where attendees will have the opportunity to watch the documentary and engage in a question and answer session with some of the individuals involved. Scheduled for Wednesday evening on November 6, the event will run from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

The collaborative event between the BBC and the University of Stirling Management School’s Interdisciplinary Research in Supply Chain and Logistics (IRiSCaL) group aims to bring to light the hidden realities within the perfume industry. Experts from Stirling University specializing in child labour, child trafficking, and business supply chains will be present to delve into the documentary’s revelations and their implications.

The documentary exposes the conditions in Egypt’s prime jasmine-growing region, Gharbia, where children as young as five toil during night hours to harvest jasmine destined for some of the world’s renowned perfume brands. The experts from Stirling University, including Dr. Umair Choksy, a senior lecturer in management, will be part of the post-screening discussions.

Dr. Choksy expressed his anticipation for the event, stating, “This is a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the issues uncovered in Perfume’s Dark Secret. Together with the filmmakers’ experience and University of Stirling academics’ expertise, we know this will be a valuable and topical discussion.”

In addition to unveiling the undisclosed aspects of the perfume industry, the screening will provide a platform for dialogue and reflection on the ethical and social implications of such practices.
