A mother of two is gearing up for an extraordinary adventure to Everest Base Camp at the end of November in honour of a close friend. Kelly Huxtable, 51, from Doonfoot, is set to raise funds for MND Scotland as a tribute to Elizabeth Casagranda, known as Betty, who bravely battled motor neuron disease (MND). Betty, a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, was diagnosed with MND in her 50s and fought the disease into her 80s, displaying remarkable courage and resilience.
Recalling their first meeting, Kelly, a hairdresser, shared, “I first met Betty when I was working at the sheltered accommodation complex where she lived. Over 12 years, until her passing in 2021, I formed a close bond with her.” Despite losing her ability to speak, Betty communicated effectively with those around her, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she encountered. MND is a devastating illness that progressively inhibits muscle function and can lead to severe mobility and communication challenges, with an average life expectancy of just 18 months post-diagnosis.
Kelly aims to continue Betty’s legacy by participating in the Everest Base Camp Trek, raising awareness about MND and supporting vital research initiatives and services for those affected by the disease. The challenging trek will span 11 days, covering 80 miles of varied terrain and altitudes in Nepal. With the support of her personal trainer, Jack Boyd, Kelly is undergoing rigorous training to prepare for this physically and mentally demanding journey.
Acknowledging Betty’s unwavering spirit and determination in the face of adversity, Kelly shared, “Betty’s strength and humour never wavered despite her struggles. She approached life with bravery and resilience, qualities that have inspired me to take on this challenge.” Joining Kelly on this expedition are her friends, as they embark on this arduous journey in honour of Betty, aiming to raise significant funds for MND Scotland.
The funds raised by Kelly will play a crucial role in advancing research efforts towards finding a cure for MND and enhancing support services for individuals and families impacted by the condition. MND Scotland expressed gratitude to Kelly for her dedicated fundraising efforts and wished her well on the trek. In summary, Kelly Huxtable’s inspiring journey to Everest Base Camp is not merely a physical feat but a heartfelt tribute to a dear friend and a noble endeavour to support MND Scotland’s vital work in honour of all individuals affected by MND.
