New £23 million project aims to protect Solway coast’s marine environment

A £23 million project has been proposed to safeguard the marine environment along the Solway coast. The Solway Coast and Marine Project (SCAMP) is set to span a decade, involving local communities in practical actions while creating economic opportunities. The council’s economies and infrastructure committee will consider supporting a £9 million Heritage Lottery Fund application at their upcoming meeting.

The coastal area is home to diverse wildlife such as Scotland’s last wild native oyster fishery, wintering Svalbard barnacle geese, and migratory populations of over 20 species of European significance. The report emphasises the commercial importance of these habitats, supporting sectors like commercial fishing and tourism, and the potential for green job creation in light of the nature and climate crisis.

SCAMP aims to explore nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and build on the council’s marine habitat restoration pilot project. This pilot project, led by Solway Firth Partnership, is slated to commence in April and continue over the next five years. The SCAMP bid is being developed by staff from the successful Galloway Glens Landscape partnership, with plans to transition to SCAMP if funding is secured.

Partners involved in the bid include Solway Firth Partnership, Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, and other key organisations focusing on nature conservation. The project targets not only research and action for local habitats but also intends to attract private sector funds for nature restoration and enhance coastal infrastructure for community access to natural environments.
