Scots nurse’s death linked to NHS approved weight loss drug

A Scottish nurse’s death has been linked to an NHS-approved weight loss drug, in what is believed to be the first such case in the UK. Susan McGowan, a nurse from North Lanarkshire, passed away after taking two low-dose injections of tirzepatide, sold under the brand name Mounjaro, for about two weeks. Her death certificate listed multiple organ failure, septic shock, and pancreatitis as the immediate cause of death, with the use of prescribed tirzepatide noted as a contributing factor. McGowan, who had worked at Monklands for 30 years, had been struggling with her weight and turned to the new weight-loss injection as a potential solution after researching and seeking medical advice.

Tirzepatide belongs to a group of weight-loss drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, designed to help patients feel fuller for longer. Approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in 2023 for weight loss purposes in the UK, including NHS use, the drug is currently prescribed to only a small number of patients due to factors like cost and availability. Reports from the MHRA’s yellow card scheme show that between January and May 2024, there were 208 reports concerning tirzepatide, including 31 serious reactions and one suspected death of a man in his sixties. McGowan’s death is too recent to be included in this data.

Manufacturer Lilly, responding to the incident, stated that patient safety is their top priority, emphasizing that Mounjaro’s approval was based on a thorough assessment of benefits and risks. They are dedicated to monitoring and reporting safety information for all their medicines. The Daily Record has reached out to both Lilly and NHS Scotland for comments on the matter.
