A man was left with serious head injuries, including a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain, after an attack on a festive night out. The incident occurred when a work colleague, identified as Andrew Collins, pushed the victim to the ground following an argument. Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that the altercation took place in Motherwell town centre after Collins and a friend had a disagreement while making their way home.
The victim, who required 13 stitches for a head wound, suffered severe injuries as a result of the assault. Collins, 44, from Crossgates, Bellshill, pleaded guilty to assaulting his colleague, causing severe injury, permanent disfigurement, impairment, and endangering his life. Both men are employed as drivers at the Brake Brothers food depot in Bellshill.
According to the prosecutor, the altercation escalated, leading to the victim falling and hitting his head on the kerb, losing consciousness. The victim was hospitalized for four days and unable to work for six months. Collins expressed deep remorse for the injuries inflicted on his colleague, attributing the incident to excessive alcohol consumption and a heated argument between the two men.
The defense lawyer stated that the incident, involving two intoxicated middle-aged men engaging in a physical altercation, resulted in unintended injuries to the victim. Sheriff Michael Higgins postponed sentencing to allow for background reports to be prepared before the next court session.
