Scientists to explore whether red wine chemical could help prevent bowel cancer

Scientists are embarking on a groundbreaking study to explore whether a chemical commonly found in red grapes, particularly in red wine and juice, could potentially aid in the prevention of bowel cancer. The research project, named Colo-Prevent, is being hailed as a significant experiment that could have far-reaching implications for individuals at a higher risk of developing the disease.

The study will not only investigate the red wine chemical resveratrol but also other preventative treatments like aspirin and metformin, a medication used to manage blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients. The goal is to recruit approximately 1,300 participants from 60 sites across England and Wales by early 2028. The focus will be on a purified form of resveratrol, a compound naturally present in red grapes, blueberries, raspberries, and peanuts.

Professor Karen Brown, an expert in translational cancer research from the University of Leicester, is leading the Colo-Prevent study. Her previous research has shown that purified resveratrol can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The trial aims to examine how drugs could prevent the growth of bowel polyps, which can lead to bowel cancer if left untreated.

Individuals aged between 50 and 73 who have been diagnosed with bowel polyps through the NHS screening programme are being sought as participants. After the removal of polyps, participants will be divided into groups receiving either aspirin alone, a combination of aspirin and metformin, purified resveratrol, or a placebo for a specified period. Subsequent colonoscopies will determine if the polyps have reappeared.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with thousands of individuals diagnosed each year. Lifestyle changes like regular exercise, a balanced diet, reduced alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking are recommended to lower the risk. Bowel cancer screening is also provided to people aged 54 to 74 every two years.

In a related development, a groundbreaking trial named Colo-Prevent aims to recruit 20,000 individuals identified as at higher risk of bowel cancer. Participants will receive a home test kit to check for early signs of bowel cancer, enhancing the scope for preventive measures against the disease.
