Scotland Leads UK in Solar Panel Installations with 100,000 Set up in 2024
Scotland is making significant progress in adopting solar panels, surpassing the UK by installing nearly 100,000 panels on rooftops this year. The surge in installations is a response to soaring energy bills, prompting tens of thousands of Scottish homes and businesses to embrace renewable technology at the highest rate in Britain.
According to the latest data from the industry standards authority MCS, about 21,500 installations, including approximately 95,000 panels, have been set up on buildings across Scotland in 2024, with 13,500 of those on domestic properties. The 2024 National Home Energy Survey highlighted that solar panels were the top choice among Scots investing in low-carbon technology for their homes, with 29% opting for solar installations. This adoption rate outshines other UK regions, with North West England at 24%, London at 20%, Northern Ireland at 14%, and Wales at 13%.
The survey, commissioned by The Eco Experts, also revealed an 87% satisfaction rate nationwide among individuals who have installed solar panels, mainly attributing it to savings on energy bills. The Eco Experts noted that homeowners with an average three-bedroom house could potentially save up to 50% on energy costs immediately by installing a solar array, amounting to savings between £270 and £640 annually for most households.
Despite the common misconception that Scotland’s weather may not be ideal for solar panels, the interest in solar power has been steadily increasing in the country. Advocates affirm that solar energy could theoretically meet Scotland’s entire energy demand if harnessed effectively.
Maximilian Schwerdtfeger from The Eco Experts expressed optimism about the future of solar energy in Scotland, emphasising the quick and tangible benefits customers experience after installing solar panels. He highlighted the encouraging trend of Scottish customers not being deterred by the upfront costs of solar panels compared to other regions.
Tom Armstrong, the managing director of Project Solar UK, echoed this sentiment, noting the high satisfaction levels reported by customers who have embraced low-carbon technologies. The availability of pay-as-you-go solar panel options in Scotland, reducing the barrier of entry with lower initial costs, further contributes to the growing interest in solar energy solutions.
Globally, there is a surge in solar panel installations, with last year marking record capacities in the UK, EU, and the US. China, in particular, has been a frontrunner in solar panel production. This momentum indicates a shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources worldwide.
