RAF fighter jets were deployed from the north east of Scotland in response to a Russian military aircraft detected flying close to UK airspace this week. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that two Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray tracked a Russian Bear-F aircraft over the North Sea on Thursday. Despite being detected in the UK’s area of interest, the Russian reconnaissance plane never entered UK sovereign airspace.
This incident occurred following the Royal Navy’s monitoring of Russian military vessels passing through the English Channel over the previous week. HMS Iron Duke and tanker RFA Tideforce shadowed three Russian vessels, led by the new frigate Admiral Golovko, along with the oceanographic research vessel Yantar and supporting tanker Vyazma. The Norwegian Navy initially tracked the vessels before British forces took over surveillance duties.
The Duke class frigate and Tide-class tanker, supported by an RAF P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, followed the Russian ships through the Channel, later handing over responsibilities to the French Navy. As the Admiral Golovko continued its journey, Iron Duke took over shadowing duties of another Russian group consisting of frigate Neustrashimy and support ship tanker Akademik Pashin en route to the Baltic.

This marks the second instance in three months that Russian ships and aircraft have been detected by British forces within close proximity.
