Life-saving Killin mountain rescuer, John Lovegrove, is set to embark on a remarkable 160-mile race to raise crucial funds for the Killin Mountain Rescue Team (Killin MRT). As a probationary member of the team, based in Killin, Perthshire, John will participate in the Montane Winter Spine MRT Challenge North 2025. This grueling non-stop race follows the northern section of the Pennine Way, spanning from Hardraw in North Yorkshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders, with a strict 108-hour time limit.
The challenging course will take runners through some of Britain’s toughest terrains, including the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall, and the Cheviots. John’s decision to take on this extreme endurance event stems from his admiration for the dedication and professionalism of the Killin MRT volunteers. The funds raised will support the team’s operations during the demanding winter months, ensuring they can continue their life-saving work.
Scheduled for January, the Montane Winter Spine MRT Challenge poses additional challenges with winter conditions such as deep snow, strong winds, and sub-zero temperatures. Sleep during the race will be limited, with participants having to find rest in bivvy bags to shield themselves from the harsh elements.
