In Dumfries and Galloway, NHS dental patients are facing nearly an 11-month wait for tooth extractions, according to South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth. The figures revealed through a Scottish Labour Freedom of Information request show a significant increase in waiting times since 2019. Currently, adults in the region are waiting 43 weeks for dental procedures, compared to just 10 weeks back in 2019/20. Children are also experiencing extended wait times, with a 42-week wait compared to nine weeks previously. Shockingly, one child had to wait a staggering 66 weeks for treatment, while one of the longest adult waits in 2023/24 was 59 weeks.
Mr. Smyth expressed his concern over the situation, highlighting the excruciating pain that rotten teeth can cause and the long wait times people in the region are enduring. He criticised the Scottish Government for failing to address the growing dental crisis, noting that the region has been designated as an area with poor dental access.
The dental crisis in Dumfries and Galloway has left around 36,000 people aged over 18 without access to an NHS dentist in the last two years. Several practices in the region have either closed or switched to serving only private patients, exacerbating the situation. However, efforts are being made to improve access to dental care, with NHS Dumfries and Galloway providing grant funding to support expanded NHS dental treatment.
Director of public health, Valerie White, highlighted the positive steps being taken, such as funding a dental practice to offer new spaces for NHS patients and providing opportunities for undergraduate students to offer free treatment to unregistered patients. Despite these efforts, the need for regular access to NHS dentists remains a challenge.
The Scottish Government acknowledged the long wait times for dental surgery as regrettable and emphasized their efforts to improve waiting times and prioritize those waiting the longest for treatment.
