Two teenage girls are currently fighting for their lives after consuming poisoned cocktails at a popular holiday destination. The incident occurred during a backpacking trip in Southeast Asia, specifically at their hostel in Udon Thani, Thailand, near the Laos border. The Australian girls, aged around 19, fell ill after ingesting alcohol that was suspected to have been contaminated with methanol.
One of the teenagers was flown to a hospital in Bangkok in a serious condition, with reports indicating that she is in a critical state. Methanol, a cheaper but toxic substitute for ethanol, was allegedly added to the drinks ingested by the girls. The group of travellers, which included approximately ten other women, were also affected by the poisoned cocktails.
According to the Methanol Institute, even small amounts of methanol can be deadly, with just 25–90 millilitres considered lethal. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing assistance to the Australian victims and their families during this distressing time. An earlier warning was issued on a backpacking Facebook group regarding the dangers of consuming local spirits in the area.
Symptoms of methanol poisoning include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, breathing difficulty, blindness, and seizures. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with consuming alcohol in unfamiliar or unregulated settings, especially while travelling abroad.
In light of this tragic event, it is essential for travellers to exercise caution and vigilance when partaking in alcoholic beverages, particularly in regions where the production and quality of drinks may not be closely monitored. Authorities are investigating the source of the contaminated cocktails to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of tourists and travellers in popular holiday destinations.
This harrowing incident highlights the importance of being mindful of what we consume while travelling and serves as a cautionary tale for young adventurers exploring new and unfamiliar territories. It is a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise from consuming contaminated substances, even in seemingly safe environments. As travellers embark on their journeys, it is crucial to prioritise safety and awareness to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
