Community Resource Centre in Whitlawburn Thrives 30 Years After Receiving Lottery Funding
A community group in Whitlawburn is experiencing continued success three decades after becoming one of the inaugural recipients of funding from the National Lottery in Scotland. Initially named The Bonus Ball Centre, the Whitlawburn Resource Centre was established in 1995 by local residents who aimed to bring positive change to their community. With an initial grant of £804,437, the disused school on Belmont Road was transformed into a vibrant hub for locals. Leading the group at that time was Philip Welsh MBE, whose legacy is now carried forward by his son, Phil.
Phil Welsh Jnr, now 56 years old, took over as chairman after his father’s passing in 2013 and has been dedicated to volunteering and fundraising for the centre ever since. Reflecting on the centre’s origins, Phil recalls the initial challenges faced by the community, including housing repairs, vandalism, and social issues. Despite his initial disinterest as a young man, Phil was inspired by his father’s passionate involvement and has since actively contributed to the centre’s development.
The Whitlawburn Resource Centre has been instrumental in providing various opportunities and activities for the local community, including gala days, bingo nights, and youth clubs. Over the years, the centre has expanded its services to include new initiatives such as a community fridge, digital access support, and family assistance programmes like school uniform recycling to support those in financial need. The recent grant of £143,168 from The National Lottery Community Fund will enable the centre to continue its valuable work.
Phil Welsh Jnr shared his commitment to upholding his father’s legacy by organizing fundraising events and engaging with the community.
