Major Road Improvement Works Planned for East Kilbride
In an effort to enhance transportation in East Kilbride, major roadworks are set to take place along Stewartfield Way. The project, expected to be completed by October 2028, was approved by councillors during a recent meeting of the Executive Committee.
The planned works will see the construction of almost 2km of an enhanced road network to widen the existing carriageway on the A749 and Stewartfield Way. Additionally, five junctions, including the Mavor and Nerston roundabouts, will be upgraded to new three or four-way traffic signal-controlled junctions with provisions for cyclists and pedestrians.

The project also includes the introduction of over 1km of new shared cycle routes to complement the existing off-road cycleway in the vicinity.

A portion of the project budget totalling £32.2 million will be redirected to the East Kilbride Town Centre Masterplan, with the remaining £30 million allocated to the Stewartfield Way Capacity Enhancement project.
Construction is scheduled to commence around October 2026, with detailed plans and proposals set to be presented to the Executive Committee and City Region Cabinet in the future.
