Salmonella could be used to treat cancer after major breakthrough by Glasgow researchers

Salmonella, a bacteria known for causing food poisoning, has now shown potential in treating cancer following a significant breakthrough by researchers in Glasgow. Cancer research teams funded by Cancer Research UK in Glasgow and Birmingham have made a discovery that could pave the way for using salmonella to combat bowel cancer more effectively. While the use of salmonella in cancer therapies has been studied before, its efficacy has been limited. The recent breakthrough reveals that salmonella depletes a crucial protein required by the body’s immune cells to fight cancer. By understanding this process, researchers hope to unlock the full potential of using salmonella to target cancer cells.

Researchers found that salmonella hinders the function of T cells, a type of white blood cell essential for the immune system to eliminate cancer cells, by depleting an amino acid called asparagine. This discovery opens up new possibilities for engineering salmonella to not target this protein, allowing T cells to effectively combat tumour cells. Dr. Alastair Copland from the University of Birmingham noted the potential of bacterial therapies in starving tumours of nutrients and expressed excitement about the new genetic target identified in this study. Lead researcher Dr. Kendle Maslowski highlighted the importance of understanding why salmonella therapies have been less effective than anticipated and how targeting specific amino acids could lead to more successful cancer treatments.

Bowel cancer is a significant health concern with over 44,000 new cases reported annually in the UK, making it the fourth most common cancer. In Scotland, around 4,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year. The study, funded by Cancer Research UK and published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine, offers promising insights into potential future treatments for colorectal cancer and other types of cancer. Dr. Catherine Elliott, director of research at Cancer Research UK, emphasised the significant potential of bacterial therapies in revolutionising cancer treatment and providing hope for patients.
