Pharmacist Warns About Silent Condition Affecting Majority of Adults

A pharmacist has issued a warning about a symptomless condition that affects three in five people in the UK. According to new data from Public Health England, 59% of adults have elevated cholesterol levels, with the percentage increasing to 72% among those aged 45 to 64. High cholesterol is a silent but potentially lethal condition that, if left unchecked, can lead to serious heart complications, including heart attacks.

Boots Superintendent Pharmacist Claire Nevinson shared insights on how to manage and prevent high cholesterol. She explained that high cholesterol means having excessive cholesterol in the blood, with different types like ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol. Having too much “bad” cholesterol can be harmful, as it can clog blood vessels and increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes.

Various risk factors contribute to high cholesterol, with some controllable, such as diet rich in saturated fats hindering the liver’s ability to remove excess cholesterol. Being physically active is vital to boosting ‘good’ cholesterol levels and reducing ‘bad’ cholesterol levels. Factors like genetics and certain health conditions like type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism can also predispose individuals to high cholesterol levels.

Nevinson emphasised the importance of making dietary choices that reduce cholesterol levels, advising against foods high in saturated fats like cakes, fatty meats, and cheese. Instead, incorporating heart-healthy options like fish, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables can help lower cholesterol levels. Nevinson also recommended proactively getting tested for cholesterol levels, especially for individuals over 40, those with excess weight, or with a family history of high cholesterol.

Taking preventive measures and making healthy lifestyle choices can significantly impact one’s cholesterol levels and overall heart health. High cholesterol may often go unnoticed due to the lack of symptoms, making proactive monitoring crucial for early detection and management.

In summary, high cholesterol affects a significant portion of the population and can have severe consequences if left untreated. By understanding the risk factors, making healthy lifestyle choices, and getting tested regularly, individuals can take proactive steps to manage and prevent high cholesterol, ultimately safeguarding their heart health and overall well-being.
