Shocked neighbours watched man choke his terrified partner in Larkhall street

Shocked neighbours were witnesses to a disturbing incident where a man was seen choking his terrified partner in a street in Larkhall. The man responsible, William Macauley, aged 37, has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for subjecting the woman to what was described as a “horrendous” experience. The sentencing took place at Hamilton Sheriff Court after Macauley pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner outside her residence on Riverside Road on May 10, while he was already on bail for another offence.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the couple had been in an on-off relationship for four years. The incident occurred around 1.30am when witnesses in nearby houses overheard a heated exchange between the couple. Macauley was seen grabbing the woman by the neck, appearing to choke her while pushing her against a garden fence. Despite her pleas for him to stop, Macauley eventually released his grip.

Concerned witnesses contacted the police, who found the woman in a distressed and intoxicated state with visible red marks on her neck, though she did not cooperate fully with the investigation. In his defence, Macauley’s lawyer, Scott Jones, acknowledged his client’s actions and expressed remorse for the distress caused to the woman. Sheriff Louise Gallacher, considering Macauley’s history of violence, deemed a prison sentence as the appropriate course of action, backdating the 16-month term to his custody since May.

Sheriff Gallacher also imposed a five-year non-harassment order after noting the profound impact Macauley’s actions had on the victim. It was revealed in court that the couple’s relationship is now over, emphasizing the seriousness of the incident and its consequences on both parties involved.

In light of this distressing event, it serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing and preventing domestic violence within our communities. It is crucial for individuals to seek help and support if they find themselves in abusive relationships, and for society as a whole to stand against such acts of violence.
