Central Ayrshire MP, Alan Gemmell, has recently shown his support for a group of former employees of UK Digital Equipment Corporation who are pushing for pension ‘justice’. The company had a workforce of approximately 1500 individuals in the Ayrshire area at their facility in Ayr’s Mosshill Industrial Estate from 1977 to 2002, before being dismantled by new owners Hewlett Packard.
The dispute between the former employees and Hewlett Packard Enterprise revolves around discretionary pension contributions. The former Digital employees argue that their pensions from contributions made before 1997 have been significantly reduced due to current legislation only indexing contributions from 1997 onwards. They are urging the tech giants to honour their commitments to the scheme.
Following the merger of Digital Equipment with Compaq in 1998, and later with Hewlett Packard in 2001, Hewlett Packard Enterprise took over the responsibility for the Digital pension scheme when Hewlett Packard split in 2017. The newly-elected Labour MP, Mr. Gemmell, has taken up the cause and raised the issue with Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds in Parliament.
During the parliamentary session, Mr. Gemmell highlighted the plight of his constituents, David Carson and Patricia Kennedy, who are facing reduced pension payments due to the indexing limitations. The ongoing review of UK pensions, initiated earlier this year, aims to enhance investment, improve saver returns, and address inefficiencies in the pension system. Affected campaigners are optimistic that their situation with Hewlett Packard Enterprise will gain attention through this review.
Although Minister Reynolds expressed her willingness to meet with MP Gemmell to discuss David and Patricia’s case, she maintained that the review will focus on enhancing outcomes for future pensioners. Patricia Kennedy, based in Coylton, has been actively challenging Hewlett Packard Enterprise to increase discretionary pension contributions. In Scotland, David Carson is leading the charge for pension fairness.
