‘I thought symptoms were menopause, but I don’t have long to live’

Katy Stephenson, a mother from Bury St Edmunds, shared her heart-wrenching experience after initially mistaking what she believed were menopause symptoms for what turned out to be a terminal cancer diagnosis. The 50-year-old was alarmed when she started experiencing severe stomach bloating and excruciating pain, especially while eating. Despite initially attributing the symptoms to menopause, Katy’s condition deteriorated, leading to an urgent hospital admission.

Initially diagnosed with appendicitis, Katy underwent surgery that unveiled the devastating truth – terminal ovarian cancer. The news left her in shock, particularly worrying about her two teenage children and how to break the news to them. After a series of tests and a biopsy, the cancer diagnosis was confirmed, prompting Katy to start aggressive treatment in early 2021.

Following months of chemotherapy and a full hysterectomy, Katy received the all-clear in June 2021, only to face a recurrence of cancer in September 2022, this time aggressively and incurably. Despite undergoing surgery, additional chemotherapy, and maintenance drugs, the uncertainty of her prognosis remains, with the possibility of as little as 18 months left.

In her courageous battle, Katy is collaborating with The Lady Garden Foundation to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and its symptoms, hoping to help others catch the disease early. While accepting the harsh reality of her situation, Katy remains determined to cherish each day with her family and not let the cancer define her.

As Katy navigates through this challenging journey, she emphasises the importance of finding positives, appreciating the smaller moments, and focusing on her family. Despite the unpredictable timeline ahead, she stands strong, living each day to its fullest and inspiring others with her resilience.
