A Scottish tourist’s journey to volunteer in Thailand took a horrifying turn when he was involved in a scooter accident that left his upper lip severely injured. Paul McDonald, 33, was on his way to a supermarket in Koh Phangan when he collided with another scooter on Monday, November 11. The impact caused Paul to be thrown over the handlebars, leaving him unconscious. He was swiftly taken to the hospital, where he underwent treatment. His injuries included two removed teeth and stitches in his upper lip to prevent it from detaching. Paul was required to pay nearly £700 in damages to the other driver, despite his claims that the accident was not his fault and that the scooter’s brakes were faulty. Additionally, he had to cover approximately £800 in medical expenses that were not covered by his insurance, leaving him financially strained. Paul, who had hoped to spend two months in Thailand, had already spent around £1,500 within a week of his arrival. He filmed the accident on TikTok live, capturing the terrifying moment when he and his phone fell to the ground after the crash. Paul shared other clips and images from the hospital, showcasing his injuries and the extensive bandaging he required.
The incident was a stark contrast to Paul’s initial intention of utilising his trip to help at an animal shelter in Thailand as a means of coping with the loss of his beloved 13-year-old dog. Following the accident, Paul expressed his disappointment and financial hardship, indicating that he would have to shorten his stay after completing his treatment. As he continues to visit the hospital daily for wound care, Paul has vowed never to ride a scooter in Thailand again, emphasising the need for increased safety measures on the country’s roads. Tourist Police Thailand has been approached for comment on the incident.
