Prestwick Kids Leading Global Recycling Initiative
Prestwick North Early Years Centre in Ayrshire is at the forefront of a worldwide initiative by spearheading a recycling project for “unrecyclable” items. The children at Prestwick North’s Early Years Centre have taken on the challenge of collecting and recycling items that are not typically accepted in regular recycling programmes. This initiative has been made possible through the centre joining several free recycling programmes, allowing them to set up a drop-off point specifically for these “hard-to-recycle” items.
Some of the recycling programmes that the centre has become a part of include The Philips Dental Care, The Warburtons Wax Wrap, and The Warburtons Bakery Free Recycling Programmes. These programmes enable the collection of items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, plastic bread bags, and wax wrappers – items that would usually end up in landfills or be incinerated as they are not included in standard kerbside recycling collections.
The collected items are sent to TerraCycle, a global leader in recycling hard-to-recyclable waste. TerraCycle processes these items, giving them a new lease of life by turning them into plastic pellets which are then used by manufacturers to create new products, reducing the need for extracting new resources from the planet. For every item collected, the centre earns TerraCycle points, which are then redeemed as monetary donations. The children will choose a charity each quarter to donate the funds to, aligning with their current learning focus.
The enthusiasm and dedication shown by the children at Prestwick North Early Years Centre in this recycling initiative are commendable. Their efforts not only contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing waste sent to landfills but also support various charities through their fundraising activities.
